About Book Production
in the Czech Republic in 2007
LEAD: The 2006 statistics on book production in the Czech Republic provided a pleasant surprise: a record number of published titles was achieved in that year. Data for book production in
the Czech Republic in 2007 have confounded even the experts:
there was a further growth of 6 %, meaning that more than 18,000
titles were published. With this, the Czech Republic – a country
with a population of about 10 million – became a world leader
when the number of published titles was measured against
the number of inhabitants. This paper gives a summary drawn
from the data available on the activities of publishing houses in
the Czech Republic in 2007.
OBSERVATIONS ON THE WORKINGS
OF LAST YEAR’S BOOK MARKET
For the publishing sector in the Czech Republic the end of 2007
was marked by fears on the part of publishers and booksellers
concerning the rising price of books. Parliament had ratified an increase in VAT on books from 5 % to 9 %, which came into effect on
1 January 2008. From around September 2007 many publishers
had been taking this change into account, setting their prices in
advance. In order to compensate their customers, in general they
continued in 2008 to offer already-published titles at unchanged
prices, meeting the increase in VAT by their own profits. For the
bookseller, an en masse re-pricing of books already published
would have been time-consuming and economically inexpedient.
In most cases they experience a “sales harvest” at the end of
the year, when their efforts are concentrated on selling.
Last year the best cards were held by distributors and
chain stores, who were pressing for more discounts – i.e. reductions in the purchase prices of books – often citing increasing
costs of fuel, energy, storage-space rental, etc. In many cases this
approach puts the existence of small publishing houses in danger: they have to fight for profitability, sometimes choosing to follow new directions in an attempt to get their product to market.
Because of this situation the professional organization which represents publishers and booksellers is considering whether to
found its own company for the distribution of books, following
the example set by its counterparts in a number of other countries.
It would be logical to assume that these fears would lead to
stagnation on the Czech book market and a sharp decline in
the number of titles published. Yet nothing of the sort has happened. Indeed, the opposite is true in that the number of book
titles produced has again exceeded the productivity of previous
years, creating a new record: in 2007, 18,029 titles were published.

BOOK PRODUCTION
The number of titles published per capita of population last year in
the Czech Republic places it among the world’s leading nations in
terms of book production. This fact alone, however, has nothing
to tell us about the quality of what was produced. Although in reality only about half of the published titles made it to the booksellers’ shelves – the other half was made up of off-market and
so-called “grey” literature, such as publications issued by state institutions, manuals and volumes of statistics, duplicated university textbooks, and other works produced for specific purposes –
the standing of the Czech Republic in the world book market is
not affected by this. About 50 (or 25) new titles are published
daily, inclusive of weekends and public holidays.
Last year almost 90 % of the total books published in
the Czech Republic was made up of new titles (16,089 of 18,029).
This is a very different situation from that of 2006, when re-editions
accounted for almost one quarter of books produced.
PUBLISHERS REGISTERED
As at 31 December 2007 4073 publishers of books were registered in the Czech Republic (see TABLE II), although this figure
includes c. 1000 subjects which since November 1989 have
closed down or ceased operations. Last year 165 new publishers
of books, including publishers of music, came into being. It is estimated that at least half of the subjects registered as publishers
are not active; they remain registered in conformity with international registration conventions. The national ISBN agency, which
is based at the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague
and is the official registrar for book publishers in this country, also
has on its records non-registered publishers, i.e. subjects (of
which there are 4265) granted an ISBN for one-off publishing activities.

As it remains the case in the Czech Republic that precise
data on the print runs of individual titles are unavailable, it is not
possible to make an objective estimate of the proportion of total
book production generated by the leading publishing companies
as opposed to smaller companies, the latter of which are more
numerous. Research conducted in 2007 by the Institute for Czech
Literature of the Academy of Sciences determined that the average print run of a book in the Czech Republic was 3334 copies.
(For fiction this figure was typically between 1500 and 2000 copies, for poetry 500 to 800.) This figure is, of course, affected by
how specific, attractive or topical a book’s theme is, or by the renown of its author; many books have print runs considerably
higher than the average, just as many have print runs considerably lower.
The process continues whereby production is concentrated among ever fewer book publishers. Last year only 29 publishers (nine of whom were universities and state institutions)
were able to bring more than 100 new titles to market. The record
total of book titles published was shared among about 1200 publishers; in 2006 books were produced by 1314 publishing houses,
in 2005 by 1356. Last year 200 publishing houses produced fewer
than twenty titles, the threshold beyond which systematic publishing activities might be measured. A decisive proportion of
the books produced in the Czech Republic is the work of a limited
number of publishers. All of these indices have stabilized in
the past few years. More than 200 of the books produced last year
were not given an ISBN. (This latter concerns small or occasional
producers of books, whose influence on the book industry in
the country as a whole is marginal.)
RANKINGS LIST OF LARGEST PUBLISHERS
In TABLE III the largest non-state producers of books in the Czech
Republic are listed by the number of titles they published in 2007.
Though this criterion is relatively mechanical, it has a definite
value and is not without interest; it gives at least a brief overview of
the turnover of the companies. On the other hand, it does not tell
us anything about the quality of the books and the editorial demands they make. Unfortunately, this overview does not provide
us with other precious indices, such as total print runs or the profits of companies, which would permit an objective quantitative
evaluation of real positions in the Czech book market. The num-

TABLE III provides clear evidence that the positions of
the largest book producers in the Czech Republic remain to
a great extent constant. Changes in the volume of production (increases and decreases alike) are of less than monumental significance. The figures given for the number of publications issued in
the past seven years attest the methodical and systematic editorial policies pursued by individual publishing houses.
PUBLISHERS OF UNIVERSITY TEXTBOOKS
AND SO-CALLED GREY LITERATURE
As publishers of universities and institutions of central government typically publish a high number of titles on specialist topics
in relatively low print runs, these publishers are shown in a se-

parate table (TABLE IV). “Grey literature” refers to publications
issued by state institutions which are not intended for the general
public, works produced for specific purposes by the civil services,
volumes of statistics, manuals and regulations for the implementation. As above, the number of titles published in a year does not
include reprints, only new titles.

THE COMPOSITION OF CZECH BOOK
PRODUCTION
The composition of Czech book production has not changed significantly in recent years. Last year, too, book production in the
Czech Republic was dominated by books in Czech, which had
a share of 87 % (15,624 of 18,029 titles). A further 958 titles (compared with 932 in 2006) were published in Czech with parts in another language. A total of 234 multilingual publications was issued last year, up from 207 the previous year. As to books from
Czech publishing houses in foreign languages, English was
again dominant, its share representing almost 4.5 % of total production (compared with 4 % in 2006).
The number of titles published last year by Czech publishers is given by foreign language in TABLE V. There was again
a marked growth – of almost one fifth – in the number of books in
English. The number of books in Spanish and French also
showed a great increase over 2006, albeit from a more modest
starting point: books in Spanish more than doubled, an achievement not quite matched by French. The steady growth of Slovak
and Polish continues. The statistics also report the publishing of
four titles in each of Esperanto and Dutch, and three in each of
Hungarian and classical Latin. One book was published in each of
Japanese, Belorussian, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

This survey of the largest producers of books among universities and institutions of central government (see Table IV
above) is mostly and essentially a re-ordering of the same publishers. The volume of production for this type is generally defined according to the needs of a given school, the meeting of
the needs of the government or parliament and the final processing of statistical research. University textbooks and teaching materials are published wherever there are universities (i.e. across
the whole territory of the Czech Republic), while fiction and children’s literature are dominated by publishing houses from the capital (accounting for an estimated 60–70 % of total production).
In certain cases there is broad interest in the work of university publishers in the general book market. Often, however,
such books are kept from bookshops for the general public for
reasons which include the different economic principles determining their production costs and by which prices are set.
In terms of books produced the share claimed by fiction
last year remained at the level of previous years; it reached almost
22 % (3927 titles), although this figure again rose in absolute
terms (in 2006 the number of titles was 3746). There was a slight
fall (by 103 titles) in the number of children’s books produced,
and this is reflected in their share of total production. In percentage terms, children’s books fell from 7.5 % in 2006 to 6.6 % last
year. School and university textbooks remained at approximately
11 %, although this segment shows modest growth in terms of
the number of published titles. A summary of the last seven years
is given in TABLE VI.

WORKS IN TRANSLATION
In 2007 works in translation again accounted for approximately
one third (almost 30 % – see TABLE VII) of the total volume of
Czech book production, although this represented a slight fall
against the previous year (31 %; see TABLE VII). From this point of
view, the Czech Republic remains among the countries which
produce the highest proportion of translated works in the world.
This is a logical result of the fact that Czech is not a world language. The publishing of translations opens the door to other language cultures.
Last year, Czech publishers gave their readers translated
works in 47 languages, including some which are no longer spoken, such as classical Latin, Old Czech and Old Slovak, and languages with few users, such as Icelandic, Hindi, Indonesian, Sanskrit, Bengali and Tibetan. The range of languages which last year
appeared in Czech translation showed an increase over 2006
(when works in translation were published in 43 languages).
The identity of the three most-translated languages in
the Czech Republic has remained unchanged since 1990.
The dominance of English continues: it accounted for almost half
of all published translations. Compared to 2006 the real number
of translations from the English was higher, while the number of
translations from the German showed a slight dip. Perhaps
thanks to the systematic support of the French government in
the form of the F. X. Šalda Programme, translations from the
French showed their greatest rise in the past few years. The constant growth in the numbers of translations from the Spanish was
arrested in 2007, although it remained the fourth most-translated
language in the Czech Republic, no doubt due in part to the fact
that interesting literature in Spanish is produced not only in Spain
but also in the countries of Latin America, Mexico, Cuba, etc. Fifth
position in last year’s table was claimed by Italian, with 81 published translations into Czech.
Nor did the identity of the three most-translated Slavonic
languages change, although Slovak gave up its position as absolute leader to Russian. Slovak suffered a severe drop last year:
the number of titles translated from the Slovak was one third of
2006’s figure. Translations from other Slavonic languages have
long been significantly less frequent in the Czech Republic,
although their number remains largely constant; in 2007 nineteen
works were translated from other Slavonic literatures, seven of
these from the Slovenian, four from the Ukrainian and three from
the Croatian.
Literary works from the Dutch were last year once again
well represented, with 35 titles published (as opposed to 43 titles
in 2006). The countries of Scandinavia, too, continued to make
a strong showing, with 21 titles from the Swedish (20 last year),
11 from the Norwegian (11), 5 from the Danish (6), and 8 from
the Finnish (6). Eleven titles were translated from the Japanese,
nine from the Hungarian (12) and six from the Portuguese (7).

EXACT FIGURES REMAIN A SECRET
Exact, absolute figures for the book market in the Czech Republic
continue to be cloaked in mystery. Data on the number of book titles published tell us nothing about what perhaps interests us
most, such as the total turnover and profit achieved, and how well
individual companies are faring. However, as mentioned above,
a certain breakthrough was made last year in the shape of
the research carried out by the Institute for Czech Literature of
the Academy of Sciences, in which it co-operated with the National Library and was supported by the Ministry of Culture.*

some of the results.
The data acquired made it possible to improve estimates
regarding the Czech book market which had been used up to this
point. Three essentials should here be emphasized: the total annual turnover for the book business in the Czech Republic is
around 11 milliard Czech crowns, i.e. 0.44 milliard euro (having
previously been estimated at around 4 milliard Czech crowns); almost 57 million copies of books are sold annually (previously estimated at around 40 million); the average price of a book in
the Czech Republic is 200 Czech crowns (8 euro).
EVENTS TO PROMOTE BOOKS BEAR FRUIT
In the Czech Republic there is not yet a complex,
wide-ranging, nationwide campaign to promote books and reading led by a state institution or an organ of central government,

as there is in certain other countries with a well developed book
culture. Nonetheless, campaigns and events led by libraries and
various groups and entities (private, interest-based, and professional) continue to bear fruit. The most significant of these are
the systematic activities of the Svět knihy [Book World] company
and its Growing with the Book campaign, The Czech Republic
Reads to its Children, A Night with Andersen (all of which seek
to promote literature for children), plus a variety of specialist
websites and other, less extensive events.
For seven years now, the Magnesia Litera book awards
have bestowed prizes in eight categories, succeeding in raising
the profile of high-quality literature among the general public.
The show at which the awards are conferred is now broadcast live
on Czech Television. Booksellers confirm that a prize-winning or
nominated title will often generate an increase in sales.
CONCLUSION
For the books business, the Czech Republic – whose official language is not a world language – is a relatively small territory with
a far from numerous customer base. Yet it is also the case that habitual reading and the building of a home library have a stronger
tradition in the Czech Republic than in other states with far larger
populations. It is to be regretted that there are fewer sponsors and
patrons of literature and book culture in the Czech Republic than
would be desirable, even necessary. Despite this lack, some
highly interesting publishing schemes have come to fruition, often
thanks to contributions from large firms. Also instrumental in
the publishing of high-quality literature are the Ministry of Culture
of the Czech Republic (in the form of grants), the Czech Literary
Fund and the Writers’ Guild. Some agencies from abroad provide
contributions for the publication of translations from their own
national literatures. At the present time the books sector in
the Czech Republic is stable and on the rise. Certain smaller problems persist, in particular in the area of the distribution of books.

In spite of some early organizational difficulties, its success with
exhibitors and the public gave clear evidence of its importance on
the Czech book scene.
22–25 May 1996
Guest-of-honour was Switzerland, a country whose literature is
written in four languages. The central theme of the fair was The Literary Translation – a Nation Journeys into the World; this was
highlighted in the media thanks to an international conference entitled “Literature Without Borders”, which addressed the propagation of translations of literary works, in particular those in minority
languages.
This year’s fair welcomed a higher number of exhibitors and offered a broader range of accompanying programmes. The fair
was also attended by a large number of British publishers.

Guest-of-honour was the Republic of Finland, which this year was
celebrating the 80th anniversary of its formation. In terms of improvements in quality of organization and the increased number
of exhibitors (715 from 16 countries), ’97 went down as one of the
more successful years.

The fair was organized by BookWorld Ltd., which had been
founded in 1997 by the Association of Czech Booksellers and
Publishers. Guest-of-honour was the State of Israel.

20–23 May 1999
Guest-of-honour was France, and for the first time the fair was
given a central theme: The Encyclopaedia – A Key to Knowledge.
Within the scope of the fair the conference of the International and
European Federation of Booksellers was held.
11–14 May 2000
Guest-of-honour was Wallonia-Brussels; the central theme was
The City in Literature, within which a common exhibition gave
an introduction to all nine cities chosen for the 2000 European
City of Culture project (including Prague, whose authorities gave
great support to the programme).
The central exhibition introduced books produced by the countries of the Visegrád Group. The exhibition’s central theme – The
Reader in the Third Millennium. The first year of the “World of
Books in Film” film festival.
24–27 April 2003
The fair provided a memorable introduction to the literature of Africa in conjunction with the “100 Best African Books” exhibition
and the announcement of the NOMA Prize for the best African
book of 2002. The central theme was “Dialogue Between Continents”.
6–9 May 2004
A region with a common past and a dynamic present: this is how
guests-of-honour Ireland, Scotland and Wales introduced themselves at their exhibition. The theme of the fair was “Literature as
a Source of Inspiration”.
5–8 May 2005
Guest-of-honour was Slovenia, whose comprehensive programme included 20 attendant writers, a wide range of readings and
discussions. The central theme – The Literature of the Slavic Peoples – provided a fine opportunity for meetings, debates and exhibitions which addressed the literatures of all Slavic peoples. The
Berliner Zimmer was premiered; readings were given by 12 writers whose work is closely connected with the city of Berlin.

Guest-of-honour was Latvia, a Baltic state and member of the
EU. Eighteen Latvian authors were in attendance at the fair. The
central theme was The Literatures of Northern Lands, although
a significant part of the fair was devoted to the literatures of
non-EU Slavic countries.

The purpose of the annual Magnesia Litera Book Award is to find and promote best books from the previous year.
The award is presented by an independent assotiation Litera consisting of the following members: Academy
of Science of the Czech Republic, Czech Centre of International P.E.N., Czech section of IBBY, Writers’ Guild,
Translators‘ Guild, Czech Literary Fund Foundation and Association of Czech Booksellers and Publishers.
Prizes were awarded in 10 categories at the evening ceremony on April 27th in the Prague City Library.
Czech Television broadcasted the ceremony directly.

CONDITIONS
� the aim of the subsidies is to encourage the translation and publication of Czech literature abroad
� all types of prose fiction and poetry may be considered, including plays and children’s books. Picture-books,
non-fiction and scientific books, and extracts or parts of translations are not eligible
� priority will be given to contemporary writing
� there are no restrictions regarding target language
� grants can only be awarded to foreign publishers (i.e. ones registered outside the Czech Republic)
� grants will be used solely to cover, or partly cover, the cost of translation, i.e. translator’s fees
� if the book is not published within one year of an award being made, the grant is automatically anulled
(an extension can be considered only in exceptional cases, supported by a written plea)
� the grant-awarding body and final arbiter is the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic

(hereafter “Ministry of Culture”), acting on the recommendations of a select committee of the Department of Arts
and Libraries consisting of writers, translators, publishers, academics and civil servants
the committee may call upon external specialists to assist in assessment
applicants should submit the completed application form and all the documents listed in the form

application may be made to the Ministry of Culture once yearly, on 15 November
if an application is submitted incomplete, the applicant must provide the missing information by return.
Failure to do so will result in the rejection of the application
in the event of any changes occurring in the terms or circumstances stated by the publisher at the time of application,
the publisher is required to notify the Ministry of Culture of such changes without delay
TERMS OF PAYMENT
� payment of the grant will be made by credit transfer to the publisher’s bank account after publication of the book
� this transfer will be effected on receipt of six inspection copies of the book together with evidence of full and final
payment of the translator’s fee

Q Label Ikar is designed to meet the

Q Label Universum focuses
on non-fiction of various kinds
– mostly large encyclopedias,
illustrated books, dictionaries
etc. Its largest project is the
Universum Encyclopedia with
database containing approx
135 000 articles. The project
started almost ten years ago
and has produced several book
editions of the encyclopedia
(10-volume, 4-volume, 2-volume,
1-volume) as well as electronic
versions on CD and DVD.
Q Odeon is a label with distinguished
reputation and years-long commitment
to publishing of literary fiction. In 2000,
the original publishing house Odeon
merged with Euromedia and has continued
its tradition of publishing high-quality,
upmarket novels within this large
company. Among its famous but also
new and promising authors are eg. García
Márquez, John Irving, Margaret Atwood,
Michael Cunningham, Ian McEwan,
Haruki Murakami, Michel Houellebecq,
Ismail Kadare, E. L. Doctorow etc.
Since 1992, Euromedia Group has successfully operated its own Book Club with over 200 000 members.
Euromedia Group further runs distribution and, together with Neoluxor company, shopping house Luxor, the
biggest boookshop in central Europe.
Since 1995, Euromedia Group has organized Book Club Literary Prize, anonymous competition for both
established and beginning authors. The winners receive financial award, their works get extensive promotion,
and are published in the same year.
