Seven mortal sins
There is a little doubt that seven capital sins
introduced by Holy Church many centuries ago have
lost a great amount of educative role in a man‘s life.
Gluttony serves as a great example. Not just that it is
no longer a mortal sin but it has even become a
socially acceptable and supported habit. Today’s
mortal sins have wholly different features. This essay
will attempt to present seven deadly sins that I find the
most appalling and from which the current world’s
society suffers.
Vanity
In my view, vanity is definitely the
most common and most serious sin of all.
Every person in the western world suffers
from it to a certain extent. People are

becoming obsessed with themselves,
spend plenty of money on clothes,
make-up, plastic surgeries, just to look
attractive and sexually appealing to the
opposite gender. What is more, this
compulsion flourishes under the pressure
of the ubiquitous commercials. This
obsession would not matter to me as
much if there were not millions of people
elsewhere in the world dying of hunger,
living off one dollar a day. Anytime I see a
lady browsing among the fur coats in a
luxury shop, I find it somehow pervert, sick
or, how appropriate, vain.
Terrorism
It is the most frequently
cited threat to the world’s society.

Terrorists are people who intend
to kill as many people, especially
civilians, as possible for a specific
purpose. Usually, their goal is to
scare the government or police or
to induce fear by use of terror and
unlawful violence. However
disaster they cause by their acts, it
seems to me that terrorists forget
one thing. The harder they try to
scare the public, the firmer and
tighter the citizens will cooperate
against them. The result is,
therefore, very opposite to what
the terrorist plan to achieve.
Furthermore, killing innocent and

harmless people, who do not have
to even know what the terrorist
fight for, is an act of shameful
cowardice and despair.
Environmental pollution
There are 7 billion people on
Earth. We have got used to
the application of one-off
materials, which we usually
discard right after we use it,
not worrying about the
unfortunate effect on our
nature. What is worse, most

of us are not even aware that
there might be any harmful
effect on the environment.
The pollution of water, air
and soil might get
unbearable in the close
future. From the point of view
of the natural environment,
the whole world’s population
lives under one roof. We
breath the same air, we walk
on the same ground, we
drink the same water.
Unsurprisingly, the

maintenance of such a
habitat requires participation
of all its members. Therefore,
whether we buy food in an
eco-friendly package or not,
eat home grown vegetables
or buy grapefruits imported
from California, we all are
contributors in a certain way.
Polluting nature around you
is like deliberately making
mess in your living room.
Xenophobia

No, xenophobia is
not a fear of the main
heroine of one certain
adventure TV series.
In the era of globalization
and lavish migration,
xenophobia is a term well
known to citizens of every
state in the world. The fear
of the unknown has roots
in everyone of us.
However, adopting a

prejudicial attitude towards
another person is unfair
and worth despising. As
said above, the number of
people on Earth is
increasing and it is thus
crucial to learn to treat
each other with respect
and dignity. Only by
cooperation and teaching
each other we can work
together. Ridiculing a
colour of skin, humiliating

other person’s tradition or
culture simply impedes or
disables the process of
human evolution and even
technical progress. I do not
believe that one race
should ever be superior to
another one. After all, a
race is only a petty,
secondary characteristic of
a person. As far as the fear
of a different religion, I
must say that every person

believes in something,
whether it is something
paranormal or not. Hence,
it is unreasonable to
condemn what others
believe in since there are
millions of people who
simply have their own
religion. I am convinced
that all such religions are
innocuous in the very core
of their philosophy.

Lie
Every lie does
not breed but another
lie. In other words, even
a white lie does not
help anything and can
only cause problems.
Once you start lying
about something, it is
impossible to get off the

vicious circle of lies and
equivocations. In my
view, truth is
irreplaceable under any
circumstances,
whatever cruel or sad it
can be for living in
oblivion and unreal
certainty is like acting in
front of a switched off
movie camera.

Obviously, nobody
wants to live in a false
ideology of lies.
Wrath
This is one of
very little sins that
have been valid for
centuries until today.

Wrath is a feeling of
satisfaction after
having made the
opponent pay off his
or her debt towards
the injured one. It is
probably of human
nature to feel envy
and hatred towards
someone who hurt or

ashamed him. Wrath
has played a major
role in lots of terrorist
attacks around the
world (see
paragraph no. 3). I
think it is a purely
emotional human
complex that comes
to surface when

triggered by others.
However, it should
be subdued because
it, once applied, only
causes pain and
does not solve
anything. Wrath is an
emotion that just
needs to be
surmounted or at

least forgotten.
These were
just a few examples
of the fall of a
modern man.
Nevertheless, the

more people are
together as a part
of the spreading
globalization, the
more mutual
problems and
issues occur.
However, as the
history has been

repeating since the
very beginning, it
seems to be just a
normal process of
evolution of human
relationships and I
do not think the
modern world is
damned and in

such a bad shape
as often presented
by media,
politicians or by the
Church.
Undoubtedly, the
“Seven modern
mortal sins” will
look totally different

in fifty years and I
keep wondering
what our
successors will
regard as the
biggest threats to
the contemporary
society. Drug
addiction? Studying

too much? Parental
abuse? Personally,
I think gluttony,
sloth, envy and
other will be
resurrected, with
people searching
for a whole new
meaning in them.
