Divadelní hra Pocahontas Anglický jazyk, 7. - 9. ročník II. stupeň ZŠ Pokyny pro žáka: Přečti si a přelož společně s ostatními divadelní hru v angličtině. Svou roli si v kopii své hry barevně podtrhej a vytvoř si k ní vlastní překlad. Při učení se své roli potom postupuj tak, že si budeš zpočátku číst anglický i český text souběžně, což ti pomůže k lepšímu zapamatování si anglického textu. Nejprve natrénuj správnou anglickou výslovnost své role při čtení v lavici (za kontroly a oprav vyučujícího), poté se svou roli nauč nazpaměť. Až budeš svou roli umět zpaměti, trénuj ji přímo „na scéně“ s ostatními herci podle pokynů režiséra (vyučujícího). Pokyny pro učitele: Přečtěte a přeložte si hru nejprve společně. Poté si rozdělte role a nacvičte „čtení“ textu s důrazem na správnou anglickou výslovnost a poté i dramatický přednes. Až budou herci umět text zpaměti, přistupte ke scénickým zkouškám. Zbytek třídy může hrát kompars – domorodé Indiány a Angličany z osady Jamestown. Příprava: Namnožit anglický text hry pro všechny žáky. Pomůcky: Rekvizity z papírové lepenky: Podle popisu 3 scén ve hře, mapa světa z počátku 17.století s vyznačením trasy mezi Londýnem v Anglii a Jamestownem ve Virginii na východním pobřeží Severní Ameriky. Kostýmy: Indiáni a Angličané z počátku 17.století Další doplňkové rekvizity: 2 papírové lodičky, kompas, 2 trůny, 2 židle, stůl, postel (lehké přenosné lehátko) Hudba severoamerických Indiánů a z Anglie17.století Doba realizace: 1. Seznámení s hrou, rozdělení rolí a čtená zkouška – 1 vyučovací hodina 2. Nácvik „na scéně“ – cca 15-20 minut, následně asi v 5 vyučovacích hodinách po sobě Co se osvědčilo: Jako motivaci před seznámením s divadelní hrou věnovat cca 2 vyučovací hodiny promítnutí filmové básně o Pocahontas „New World.“ Následující 3 vyučovací hodiny doporučuji věnovat zjednodušené četbě knížky „Pocahontas“ (viz. použitá literatura) s vypracováním interaktivních úkolů k četbě, obsažených v dané publikaci. Poslední scénickou zkoušku je dobré provést jako generálku v kostýmech a na místě, kde bude premiéra probíhat. Premiéru je vhodné uvést např. jako vystoupení ke Dni jazyků pro spolužáky, učitele a rodiče žáků. O výrobu rekvizit můžeme požádat vyučujícího výtvarné výchovy, pod jehož vedením si žáci v hodinách VV rekvizity sami vytvoří. Metodický list Centrum Korálek Jazyk a jazyková komunikace Div.hra Pocahontas Očekávané výstupy: Žáci zahrají divadelní hru z anglicky mluvícího prostředí v anglickém jazyce, což je jeden z výborných prostředků, jak učinit používání cizího jazyka přirozenějším jevem. Zároveň se nenásilnou formou seznámí s historií a problematikou života původních obyvatel amerického kontinentu. Mezipředmětový vztah: Dramatická výchova, výtvarná výchova, literární výchova, občanská výchova, zeměpis, dějepis Zohlednění žáků se SVP: Tito žáci zde mají možnost aktivního využití cizího jazyka alternativní formou, což může výrazně přispět ke zvýšení jejich jazykového sebevědomí. They want to begin a new life, and to make their home in the New World. They build a town and call it Jamestown, after king James of England.(Sign a Jamestown on the map.) Virginia is a new world for the English, but it is not new for the Indian people of North America. They live there, their fathers and their grandfathers lived there before them. It is their country, their home. And they do not like these white men from across the sea. One of the Englishmen, John Smith, goes up the river in a boat (small boat goes up the river on the map), because the winter comes soon and he needs to get corn (show the real corn) from the Indians. But the Indians find him and take him to the great King, Powhatan.(The Indians take him to their king.) The Indians want to kill him, but Powhatan has a daughter – the beautiful and bright Pocahontas.(Now she came to the scene.) She looks into John Smith’s blue, blue eyes … and so begins a famous story of two countries, two people, and a love without end. Scene 1 – John Smith is brought to the Indian village and everybody stared at him. The Indian village is surrounded by the forest. Pocahontas: (looked at the Smith blue eyes for a long time) Smith: (smiled at the little girl and closed one of his eyes for a second) Pocahontas:(laughed and then she smiled back at him) Powhatan: Why are you in my country, white man? Where do you come from and who is your king? Smith: I come from England, the country over the big sea and there rules the King James. That’s why we called our village here Jamestown. We want to live here and be your friends, Powhatan. But this winter the people of Jamestown are hungry, so we need food. Opekankanu (Pocahontas’ brother, was angry): These Englishmen cannot live here. They are taking our land and killing our people with their guns. They want King James of England to be king here, too. They call their town King James’s Town and they call our beautiful river King James’s river! But what about us? This is our country! We live here and our fathers and grandfathers lived here before us. We don’t want the English, or their King James. We must kill them all now! Powhatan: Perhaps, but let’s think first. The English have guns, so we need guns too. I must think carefully about this. Pocahontas, come with me into the forest. (They walked to the forest.) Now, what do you think about this Englishman, little Pocahontas? Pocahontas: Oh father, I like him. He has wonderful blue eyes – the colour of the sky. My brother wants to kill him, but I want to know more about these Englishmen first. Powhatan: And you can help me with this. I’m going to give him to you, little Pocahontas. Pocahontas: Give him to me, father? Powhatan: Yes, listen carefully, now. You must do this …(They went back to the village.) Opekankanu: Are you going to kill this white man? Powhatan: Yes, bring him here and put his head on this stone(in front of Powhatan’s feet. Then Opekankanu took a big stick. Pocahontas looked at her father and he moved his head a little. John Smith closed his eyes waited to die, but suddenly he felt Pocahontas’s arms on his face.) Pocahontas: No, Opekankanu! No! I am the King’s daughter, and I say NO! (She looked at her father.) Father, don’t kill this man, please! Give him to me! Pocahontas (smiled): Come with me, white man. You are my Englisman now. Come! (They leave to the forest.) Narrator: John Smith stayed with Pocahontas for some days. She learnt some English, and he learnt more of her language. Soon they were good friends.But Powhatan’s men watched Smith carefully and he could not leave the village. Then one day powhatan said: Powhatan: You can go home to Jamestown, John Smith. But you must send me two of your big guns. Smith:(to himself) Well, I don’t like it, but I can’t say “no”. (to Powhatan) OK. Narrator: So, he went to Jamestown and Pocahontas, Opekankanu and some Indians went with him. Scene 2 – outside the Jamestown near the sea. Jamestown is surrounded with a large fence from the wood with big guns on it. Smith: (to the Indians in front of the big gun) As you can see, you can’t take our big guns with you, because they are too heavy for you. But I can give you some gunpowder for Powhatan. Here, take it. Be very careful with it. Opekankanu: Thank you. But one day we will take these big guns too, they are very important for us. Smith: Perhaps, but we want to be your friends and friends are better than guns. Narrator: That winter, Pocahontas came to Jamestown many times with the food for the Englishmen. And she learnt many interesting things in Jamestown.(Pocahontas coming with the basket full of corns and fish and looking at the compass.) Then, in the spring , two big ships with another Englismen come to Jamestown. They brought also women with them. But James Smith was an adventurer and he soon went back to England with those two ships for another adventure voyage. But, he didn’t say even “Goodbye” to poor Pocahontas. Later the Indians made a raid into Jamestown and took to the Englismen their big guns.(Indians with the war’s yells came come into Jamestown and take their big guns.) So one day, in October 1609, Pocahontas went to Jamestown, but she couldn’t find John Smith. Pocahontas: Where is John Smith? Englisman: Smith? He left Jamestown a month ago. But I have heard, that his ship had an accident. So, maybe, he is not alive any more now. Pocahontas: (got very sad and starts to cry) Englishwoman: Don’t cry, poor girl, for him. We love you and you can stay here with us. Pocahontas: Thank you, I will stay here with you, my dear friends. Narrator: Pocahontas stay in the Jamestown and she taught the Englishman, how to grow the corn. Pocahontas: Look! You must plant the corn and the beans this way! (She puts the seeds of beans to the corn’s plants) The big corn plant will be a stick for the bean plants! Engliswoman: Oh, Pocahontas, we are so glad that you learnt us how to grow the corn. One of them was the man called John Rolfe. He loved Pocahontas very much and he wanted her to marry him. So one day he asked her: Rolfe: Pocahontas, I know, that you loved another John. And I can understand your deep sorrow for him, because I also lost my wife and daughter. But I love you. Would you want to be my wife? Pocahontas: I know I should be happy about your proposal. Yes, you are right, I have still John Smith in my heart. But he’s probably dead and I know that you are a good man. So, my answer is: Yes, I will marry you, if you wish it. (And she gave him her hand and they went together.) Narrator: John Rolfe was a good husband and a year later, they had a little son, Thomas. Pocahontas loved him very much. (Pocahontas and John Rolfe come to the scene with the baby.) A legend about kind Indian princess Pocahontas came to England soon. So, in 1616, King James and his wife Queen Anne wanted to see her on their own eyes and invited John Rolfe, Pocahontas and their son Thomas into England. After seven weeks on the ship, they arrived to London. (Show on the map small boat going to England.) Scene 3 – (Left half scene) A big hall in theBuckingham Palace, in front of it thrones of the king and queen. (Right half scene) Inside a room of Rolfe’s family in London with the big window with a wiev on the park and grey sky with raining clouds. In front of it is a bed, a table and a chair . King James: (to Pocahontas) I am pleased to meet you, dear Indian Princess Pocahontas. Will you tell me about your father? Pocahontas: Of course, I will. My father is the King of the Algonquin people. He has many men and villages. But our country is quiter than England. Our people understand forest and the animals and the rivers. You can learn from us and we can learn from you, too. We must be friends. King: Of course we must, Jamestown has my name, so I’m very interested in it. Queen: Here, I have a letter about you, Pocahontas. It’s from a man called John Smith. He says he was your friend, when you were a little girl. Is that true? Pocahontas:(for a second or two she could not speak) A letter form John Smith? But he’s dead! Queen: Dead? No, he’s here in England. (Pocahontas got very weak.) But what’s the matter, my dear? Are you ill? Pocahontas: No, I’m all right. I’m very happy. Narrator: But that night, Pocahontas could not sleep. (Pocahontas in the bed.) Two days later, John Rolfe brought John Smith to see Pocahontas. He was older, but she remembered him. Smith: Hello, Pocahontas, do you remember me? Pocahontas: (looked at him, but said nothing) John Rolfe (watched them): It’s John Smith, my dear. Are you happy to see him again? Pocahontas: No, I’m sorry. No.(she looked out of the window, at nothing, because she couldn’t look at Smith.) John Rolfe: (went out) Smith: (after a minute, waiting): You are a wife now, and a mother. Pocahontas: No, you don’t look different. But - why did you go away from Virginia? Smith: I’m an adventurer so I went for another adventures voyage. Pocahontas: In Jamestown they told me you were dead. Smith: Dead? No, not me. Pocahontas: But you didn’t tell me! You didn’t write me a letter – not one letter in eight years, John Smith! My father gave me to you. Do you remember? That day was the beginning of my love for you. And you didn’t love me. You never loved me! Smith: I … don’t know about your love. You are the daughter of a King, Pocahontas, and I’m not rich, or important. I never had a wife. Perhaps I don’t understand women. I’m sorry, Pocahontas. I was wrong. Pocahontas: Goodbye, John Smith. Have a good luck with your adventures voyages! Smith: Goodbye, Pocahontas!(looked at her for a while, walked away.) Narrator: And she never saw him again. Six months later, John Rolfe said to Pocahontas (in the bed): Rolfe: We must go back to Virginia, my dear. My work is waiting for me there. And you need the warm sun of Virginia, too. You are ill now, and the cold rain of the English winter is not good for you! Pocahontas: Goodbye, John! I feel, that I’m too weak to go with you over the sea. Now, I’m going home right now - home to the forests and rivers of my country. Don’t cry for me, my darling, our son will go there with you! Every time you looked at him, you will remember me and our love. Goodbye, my dear husband! Narrator: Pocahontas died in Gravesend in March 1617. She is famous for two things. She was the first American woman to marry an Englishman and to come to England. And she was a good friend to the English when they first went to Virginia. Her husband, John Rolfe, went back to Virginia and married an Englishwoman there. He died in Virginia in 1622. Pocahontas’ son Thomas lived with Rolfe family in England when he was a child, but in 1635 he went to live in Virginia. And John Smith did not leave England again. He wrote many interesting books about America, and he wrote the book about Pocahontas too. He lived until 1631, but he never had a wife.
