V tomto roce oslaví své 90. narozeniny pan
Vladimír Kalík, vynikající český amatérský
koleopterolog a specialista na čeleď Dermestidae
(kožojedovití).
Narodil se v Pardubicích 24. července 1918.
Jeho brzký zájem o přírodní vědy krystalizoval
během jeho studia na gymnáziu v Pardubicích,
kdy se věnoval řádu Coleoptera spolu se svým
spolužákem Karlem Kultem, pozdějším specialistou na čeleď Carabidae. Jejich počáteční
výzkumy byly podporovány panem Iserlem, který
na škole vyučoval přírodní vědy. V. Kalík zůstal
entomologii věrný i po maturitě. V roce 1936 se
stal poštovním úředníkem a pokračoval ve studiu
brouků se zvláštním zaměřením na čeleď Dytiscidae. Během druhé světové války byl poslán na
nucené práce v Německu (1942-1943). To pro něj
mělo jeden pozitivní výsledek. Přišel do styku
s profesorem H. Sachtlebemem a R. Korschefskym
z dřívějšího Deutsche Entomologische Institut
v Berlíně. Ti obrátili jeho zájem na přehlíženou a hospodářsky významnou čeleď Dermestidae
a usnadnili mu první seznámení se základní literaturou v této oblasti.
Několik let V. Kalík korespondoval a vyměňoval materiál s dnes již legendárním francouzským entomologem M. Picem. Pan V. Kalík zpracoval, determinoval nebo revidoval
mnoho neurčených materiálů z řady muzeí po celém světě a sám i s kolegy popsal 52 pro vědu
nových taxonů.
V průběhu 70. a 80. let 20. století V. Kalík vážně onemocněl oční chorobou a zdravotní
situace se stále zhoršovala. Vzhledem k této vážné nemoci byly jeho entomologické aktivity
časově velmi omezené. Přesto spolupracoval s jinými kolegy a podařilo se mu publikovat
několik taxonomických a faunistických prací, např. s R. S. Bealem (USA) a N. Ohbayashim
(Japonsko). Od roku 1999 spolupracuje a publikuje taxonomické práce s J. Hávou (Praha)
a v posledních letech i s M. Kadejem (Wroclaw, Polsko). V roce 2004 byla jeho soukromá
sbírka čeledi Dermestidae deponována do Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart
v Německu.

This year Vladimír Kalík, an outstanding Czech amateur coleopterologist and a well-known
specialist in the family Dermestidae, celebrated his 90th birthday. He was born in Pardubice
on 24 July 1918. His early interest in natural history crystallized during his study at a secon-

dary school in Pardubice, when he turned to the study of the Coleoptera together with his
school-fellow Karel Kult, who later specialized in the Carabidae. Their early explorations
were much supported by Mr. Iserle, who taught natural history at the school. Consequently,
V. Kalík remained faithful to entomology after the school-leaving examination. In 1936 he
became postal clerk and continued his study of Coleoptera with a special interest in the Dytiscidae. During World War II, he was ordered to forced labour in Germany in 1942-1943. It
had one positive result for him: it brought him in contact with Professor H. Sachtlebem and
R. Korschefsky from the former German Institute of Entomology in Berlin. They turned his
interest to the neglected and economically important beetle family Dermestidae and facilitated
his first acquaintance with the basic literature in this field.

Kalík identified and/or revised enormous amounts of specimens from many museums throughout the world and described 52 new taxa. For several years, he even exchanged
letters and specimens with the legendary French entomologist Maurice Pic.
Unfortunately, his entomological activities became progressively restricted due to a severe
eye disease in the 1970s and 1980s. Despite that he continued to collaborate with other specialists, e.g. with R. S. Beal (USA) or N. Ohbayashi (Japan), and published several faunistic and
taxonomic works. Since 1999, he has been collaborating with J. Háva (Praha, CZ) and in the
recent years also with M. Kadej (Wroclaw, Poland). His collection of the family Dermestidae
was deposited in the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart, Germany, in 2004.
