Example 2 A: Do you think I should sign up for the course? It's quite expensive. B: If you're sure you'd like it, then go for it. RIGHT: I am stressed at the moment. Stress is a common problem at work, and using the word correctly is a common problem in English. We use the word 'stress' to talk about the thing that causes mental pain, but we do not say we are 'in stress', as in Czech. Instead you have to use the adjectives 'stressed' and 'stressful'. If an individual is feeling under pressure at work, you can say, 'He is really stressed'. Or if a situation is difficult and making you feel anxious, you can say, 'It is really stressful.' So together: A: I am really stressed at the moment. B: I can understand. That new project you're doing is really stressful. 3 Business Writing More about uncountable and countable nouns Last time we looked at using ‘much’ with uncountable nouns and ‘many’ with countable nouns. There are some more words which can be used only with one of the types of nouns. Here’s a table to help you, with some examples. WORDS COUNTABLE UNCOUNTABLE EXAMPLE little, less, least no yes little energy few, fewer yes no few people much no yes much money many, several yes no several surprises In spoken English you may hear people use “less” with countable nouns, and you’ll probably see it in the supermarket checkout queue (5 items or less). This is not standard English and you should definitely avoid it in business writing.
