Ústav fyziky plazmatu AV ČR, v.v.i., Praha, Czech Republic Institute of plasma physics AS CR, Prague and EUROfusion consortium Jan Mlynář, Ivan Ďuran Czech Industry for ITER meeting at Institute of Plasma Physics AS CR, 8th October 2014 The Institute of Plasma Physics AS CR (IPP Prague) Coordinated the Association EURATOM-IPP.CR (2000-2013) • and carried out ~ 90% of its research workprogramme Carries out fusion research, in particular in its Tokamak Department • operation and scientific exploitation of the COMPASS tokamak • training (national and international) • participation in the co-ordinated research programme Ústav fyziky plazmatu AV ČR, v.v.i., Praha, Czech Republic New in 2014: EUROfusion consortium The consortium will implement joint programming of research co-funded by EU through EURATOM. Main difference from the past: EURATOM maintains agreement with one umbrella organisation only. Main work packages (grants): eight missions, 23 projects. For IPP Prague, the MST2 (Medium Sized Tokamaks) and ‘Enabling research’ missions are relevant. DEMO missions are also significant. EUROfusion structure: Decisions – General Assembly (chairs: Sybille Günter, Jérôme Pamela, Coordination and Administration – IPP Garching, Programme Manager – Tony Donné Notice: EURATOM also maintains fusion funding to JET (through the JET Operating Contract) and to ITER construction (through F4E) Association EURATOM IPP.CR Ústav fyziky plazmatu AV ČR, v.v.i., Praha, Czech Republic Consortium EUROfusion Fusion for Energy Coordinated EU fusion research and training, 28 countries EFDA – www.efda.org FUSENET – www.fusenet.eu ITER EU Domestic Agency Manages the EU’s contribution to the ITER Organisation through procurements and R&D grants fusionforenergy.europa.eu Main partners in fusion research in the Czech republic: Clear increase in the efforts (and manpower) since the ITER decision AS CR: IPP Prague, Inst. of Physical Chemistry, Nuclear Physics Institute, Inst. of Physics of Materials Private: Research Centre Rez, Institute of Applied Mechanics Universities: Czech Technical University in Prague (FNSPE, FEE), Charles University (FMP) The COMPASS tokamak The COMPASS tokamak The COMPASS tokamak chamber Scientific programme: – Edge plasma physics – ITER-like configuration scaling (“wind-tunnel”) experiments – Development of advanced diagnostic methods COMPASS 4 ITER Two MST2 EUROfusion projects, a key partner in several enabling research projects Optimisation of shape of the inner First Wall tiles (see figure) Participation in the JET programme Support to Thomson scattering diagnostic procurement process Support to modelling of plasma interaction with the castellated tungsten first wall Scientific Collaborations International collaborations: - in total we spend about 500 days in foreign labs per year (in particular, at the Joint European Torus JET, but also in Germany, France, UK, ITER IO…) - also approx. 500 days of foreign guests at COMPASS (in particular from Hungary, Portugal, France etc) - annual Programmatic Conference, International Board of Advisors, Steering Committee - we have members of international councils including the F4E Governing Board JET EDUCATION and TRAINING Education: - Currently 12 undergraduate and 14+3 doctoral students supervised - undergraduate programme “Physics and Technology of Thermonuclear Fusion” at FNSPE CTU - doctoral students from Charles University - GOLEM tokamak at FNSPE CTU - a strong role in the FUSENET Association www.fusenet.eu (open to internships!) - Associate member of the Erasmus Mundus Doctoral College -International training courses SUMTRAIC, EMTRAIC etc.
