4 55 INTRODUCTION The Czech Republic became a European Union Member State in May 2004. This was a distant dream, before the Velvet Revolution. Involvement in the Single European Space offered new possibilities to this country, opened new vistas and brought solidarity subsidies that help us make up for the years lost behind the Iron Curtain. We feel at the same time that the “old” member States are slow to adjust to the EU enlargement and are apprehensive of us. However, we want to do more than just to get used to the new environment and wait for what times and tides will bring. We want to actively contribute have our own input to the direction of a future single Europe. The Czech Council on Foreign Relations called an international competition, in October 2005, for EU Academies of Art, inviting students to create posters which would reflect their perceptions of the European Identity. Altogether, 167 students of 14 art academies in eight EU Member Countries have expressed their viewpoints. The outcome proves there is more to our mutual understanding than meets the eye. The visions of many students from old and new Member States often converge. This first stage of the project is material for debate that we intend to continue by involving students from other Member States as well as countries vying for involvement in the process of European integration. Poãet prací studentÛ a velk˘ zájem o projekt pfiedãil na‰e oãekávání a vûfiíme, Ïe i dal‰í fáze projektu budou v tomto trendu pokraãovat. poznání. Symbolická forma dokumentuje souãasné my‰lení a zafiazuje je do jasného ãasového kontextu. Projektu se zúãastnili studenti evropsk˘ch vysok˘ch umûleck˘ch ‰kol, formovaní rÛzn˘mi národními a kulturními After the Czech Republic’s EU entry, the idea was born for a project that would simply and cogently – without any zvyklostmi. Rozdílnosti, jak v˘tvarné, tak ve vyjádfiení tématu, se navzájem nevyluãují, ale naopak vytváfiejí zajímav˘ linguistic hurdles – help young people express their attitudes towards their European identity. A team of organizers got v˘sledn˘ celek. Nosnou my‰lenkou je down to work at once to specify the conditions. The project’s implementation was commenced during 2005. to, Ïe rozdílnost kultur obohacuje poznání nás v‰ech a nutí k zamy‰lení. We should like to use this opportunity to thank all those who helped this project to come to its fruition, especially art Vûfiím, Ïe tato v˘stava pfiispûje ke sblíÏení, ale i k navázání nov˘ch kontaktÛ, tak dÛleÏit˘ch pro vzájemné porozumûní. 6 academy teachers for their advice and guidance, all students for their entries, and all those who have shared in this project through their work, support and financial donations. Poster is a phenomenon, a medium that enables quickly and immediately to share the values and input that inform its origin. Poster is a mirror of social and cultural developments. Unlike the other information and communication media, The sheer numbers of entries and broad interest in our project have exceeded our expectations and we hope to keep momentum throughout the future phases of the project. poster bases its message on a strong emotional component represented by its artistic and aesthetical expression, thereby multiplying its effects. Jana Lásková Content – wise, posters come in three basic incarnations – cultural, commercial and ideological – though these aspects often overlap. Entries highlighted by this catalogue should be clearly perceived as ideologically motivated posters. This exhibition is ideologically motivated by the same strong impulse that gave birth to the European Union. Discussions about the EU are mostly conducted by politicians. This exhibit maps the views of the young generation. Open dialogue gives hope that cooperation and mutual rapprochement will help grasp the meaning of the questions that are being asked today. Metaphor, humour and hyperbole of artistic message are the breeding ground of knowledge. Symbolical form documents modern thought and put it into a clear time context. This project was attended by students of European art academies with various national and cultural backgrounds. Different artistic and expressional means are not mutually exclusive to the contrary form an interesting final effect. Therefore, it would be wrong to take this exhibit as a confrontation of schools and authors. Its underlying message is the diversity of cultures that expands our knowledge and makes us think. I believe this exhibition will help us come closer together and facilitate new contacts – the essence of mutual understanding.
