My reason for coming wasn’t for the

Maasai Academy.
But what I wasn’t prepared for was the
impact they would have on me, or the
unspoken stories I would see.
Although Maasai culture might not be as
secure as in the past, when they owned
the land all the way from northern Kenya
down to central Tanzania, when they were
the strongest and most feared tribe in
the all of East Africa, their pride is still
apparent, despite what they’ve lost.

na vlastní oči zažiji.
I když kultura Masajů není taková, jaká bývala
v době, kdy jim patřila území od severní Keni
až po střední Tanzanii, kdy byli nejsilnějším a
nejobávanějším kmenem v celé východní Africe.
Navzdory všemu, co ztratili, je jejich hrdost
nadále patrná.
The unspoken stories..
Nevyslovené příběhy . . .
Both men and women love to adorn themselves with beaded jewellery. Besides beautifying
themselves with it, it also plays a very important part in their society.
Certain bead work patterns tell that a husband has passed away, or a child has been born
or circumcised. Designs based on geographic location serve as passports within Maasai
territory.
The various tribes within Maasailand use their own colours and designs to
differentiate themselves – it forms part of their tribal identity.
Over the years I’ve been given beaded necklaces and bracelets by the Maasai women. This
collection now tells a story of my personal journey with these exceptionally beautiful people.
Jak muži, tak ženy milují zdobit se bižuterií dělanou z korálků. Sice se s ní zkrášlují, ale
korálky také hrají velmi důležitou roli v jejich společnosti.
Některé designy z korálků svědčí o tom, že zemřel manžel, narodilo se dítě nebo že bylo
obřezáno. Designy založené na geografické poloze slouží jako cestovní pasy v rámci
masajského území. Každý kmen má své vlastní barvy a designy, kterými se odlišuje - je
to vlastně součást identity jednotilivých kmenů.
Za ta léta mi masajské ženy darovaly hodně korálkových náhrdelníků a náramků. Z mé
kolekce se teď také stal příběh o mé vlastní cestě mezi tyto mimořádně krásné lidi.
Inner beauty . .

I haven’t met one man or woman who

For the Maasai cattle hold a place in society

Druhý den velmi brzy ráno se Maasinta
probudil a udělal to, co mu Enkai nařídil.
Vyšel z domku ven, postavil se u zdi a čekal
na to, co mu bude Enkaiem dáno. Brzy
Maasinta zaslechl blížící se hřmění. Enkai
z nebes stáhl dlouhý kožený řemen a krávy
začaly po řemenu sestupovat dolů na Zemi
do ohrady. Země se začala třást, div se
Maasintův dům nesesypal. Maasinta strnul
strachem, ale ani nešpitl, ani se nehnul.

“Ayieyieyie!”, for Dorobo was in a state
of utter shock! Upon hearing this, Enkai
quickly pulled back the thong. No more
cattle descended from above and once
again the earth fell silent. Thinking it was
Maasinta who had cried out, Enkai said to
him: “Is it that these cattle are enough for
you? So be it, for I shall never again do
this for you, and therefore you had better
love these cattle in the same way as I love
you.” It is for this reason that the Maasai
love their cattle so dearly and believe that
all cattle are theirs.

“Tak to už Ti stačí – Ty víc krav už nechceš?
Dobrá, tak už Ti nikdy takto nepomůžu.
Proto měj rád tento dobytek, který máš,
stejně jako miluji já Tebe.”
Proto Masajové tolik milují svůj dobytek a
věří, že všechny krávy jim patří.

nebo kdekoli jinde na světě.
Energy exchange..
From my own experience, not just from the perspective of taking photographs of these
beautiful people, but actually being there and sitting with them, sharing stories and life
experiences, I realise that we have so much to learn from one another despite our cultures
being so vastly different. We all have our joys and laughs. We all have our fears and tears.
We all have our struggles. At the core though we are the same women facing the same
fundamental issues that we have for millennia.
What I am offering here is a snapshot of my experience with real people in Africa and
their hopes that their children will be able to balance the influence of the West with their
heritage.
My hope is that we can continue to respect one another and to exchange the wisdom and
energy of both worlds for the good of all.
Výměna energie
Z času stráveného s Masaji jsem se poučila nejen o jejich kultuře, ale také o našem západním
světě a i o sobě. Byla to cesta sebepoznání na mnoha úrovních.
Z mé vlastní zkušenosti s Masaji, a nejen z hlediska fotografování tohoto krásného lidu, z
posezení a povídání s nimi, sdílení příběhů a životních zkušeností, jsem si uvědomila, že se
můžeme jeden od druhého hodně naučit. A to přes veškeré rozdíly našich kultur, které jsou v
mnoha směrech diametrálně odlišné. Všichni se umíme radovat a smát. Všichni známe strach
i slzy. Všichni s něčím zápasíme. V jádru jsme ale stejné ženy, které se po tisíceletí potýkají v
podstatě se stejnými základnímy problémy.
To, co zde nabízím, jsou momentky mých zážitků s reálnými lidmi z Afriky, jejich nadějí a jejich
přání, aby další generace dětí našly rovnováhu mezi vlivem Západu a jejich dědictvím.
Pevně věřím, že budeme i nadále respektovat jeden druhého, že si budeme moci navzájem
vyměňovat znalosti i energii z obou světů, pro dobro nás všech.

Africa. She is an award winning photographer with recognition from: Judge’s Favourite in
the International Travel Photographer 2005. In 2006 she was placed in the top three of the
Commonwealth Photographic Award in UK and in 2007 was one of the selected finalists in
the Photographer of the Year (UK) Travel Portfolio Section.
“The work being done at the Maasai Academy holds a special place in my heart. Education
is an integral part of sustainability and the importance of these efforts cannot be overstated.
Many of the people I met during my time with the Maasai were through parties involved with
the Maasai Academy. Without their help my task would have been far more challenging and
the results less worthwhile. As a token of my appreciation and in support of the work they
are doing at the Academy, 10% from the sale of these photographs will be donated to the
Maasai Academy to continue empowering the next generation with the necessary skills to
survive in an ever changing world.”
Nežli se Vladia, původem ze Slovenska, usadila v Jižní Africe, procestovala Evropu a Dálný
východ. Je uznávanou a oceňovanou fotografkou: v roce 2005 získala cenu „Oblíbená fotka
poroty” (Judge’s Favorite) na výstavě International Travel Photograher. V roce 2006 se
umístila v první třetině Commonwealth Photographic Award ve Velké Británii a v roce 2007
byla jedna z finalistů Photographer of the Year (UK) v Kategorii cestovního portfolia (Travel
Portfolio Section).
Doufám, že tímto upozorním na dobrou práci Red Tribe projektu a zejména Masajské
akademie. Tyto iniciativy jsou mému srdci blízké. Vzdělávání je nedílnou součástí udržitelnosti
a význam těchto snah nelze přeceňovat. Jako poděkování a na podporu práce, která se v
rámci projektů Red Tribe a zejména Masajské akademie vykonává, věnuji 10% z prodeje
těchto fotografií Masajské akademii, aby i nadále pomohla posilovat v další generaci
