Antennae and politics
On Friday evening, October 26, 2012, Jihlava saw a special screening of Free
Smetana!, a film shot by the duo Vít Klusák and Filip Remunda, who are wellknown for their controversial films Czech Dream and Czech Peace. These two
directors filmed a documentary about Roman Smetana, who'd decided to fight
our political culture in rather unusual way – by drawing antennae on politicians'
heads. Mr. Smetana was then sentenced by Ms. Langerová, a judge and wife of
one of the defamed politicians. Mr. Smetana chose to go ahead with his political
gesture regardless the cost and to continue his struggle whatever the
consequences. He repeatedly refused to accept any alternative punishment, and
as a result, he was sentenced to prison for 100 days.
His struggle resulted in direct confrontation with Prime Minister Petr Nečas, when
he posed as a student of the Film School of Academy of Performing Arts and
attempted to interview him about his own conviction. “We didn't egg Roman on
to meet the Prime Minister. It was his own idea,“ the director Vít Klusák
explained. Both authors, Vít Klusák and Filip Remunda, joined Mr. Smetana's
struggle, when they too started drawing antennae on politicians' heads, thus
imitating political activism of stubborn Roman Smetana. „We wanted to show our
support,“ the director Filip Remunda added.

A Hero of Our Time
“I feel that a story of Roman Smetana is an important story of our time, clear
evidence of a rising gap between the world of politicians and the world of their
voters. I'm glad that the authors managed to finish the film in such a short time.
It's a pity that Czech Television didn't enter the film in the competition. But it's
true that there wasn't enough time to do so. I welcome the changes in Czech
Television dramaturgy started by Petr Dvořák and I believe that our public TV will
continue to develop in that direction,“ said Marek Hovorka, Director of Jihlava
International Documentary Film Festival.
