16th International Documentary Film Festival in Jihlava
The festival in Jihlava has already attracted thousands of viewers, issuing over
2000 full-time accreditations.
The hard life of a Russian activist
Tomorrow, a film about the Russian activist group Voina was screened this
morning to great audience interest. The ensuing Q&A with the director, Andrei
Gryazev, revealed that he had little difficulty in gaining access to Voina as he had
known members of the group since before they gained notoriety. However, this
was where the easy part of the shooting process ended. For example, fears of
confiscation made Gryazev back-up his footage every day on several data
storage devices, which would then be given for safekeeping to not one, but
several people simultaneously.
The future of public broadcasters
Televisions and in particular national public channels in Central Europe have
traditionally represented important and often key partners for documentary filmmakers. Documentary film in itself has been undergoing a dynamic evolution and
forms a seminal genre in cinema. Key figures of Central European public
television channels discussed issues related to documentary film production at a
joint session in Jihlava. Czech Republic was represented here by Petr Dvořák, the
director general of Czech Television, participants in the panel discussion included
Václav Mika, the general director of Radio and Television of Slovakia, Julius
Braun, the general director of Polish Television, and László Szabó, deputy of the
general director of Hungarian Television. The panel addressed issues such as
current legislation, long-term visions for the development of public media
services, the possibilities of co-operation and joint projects. “I am thrilled that all
public televisions give major support to documentary film production, and will
continue to do so in the future, because the support of independent documentary
film-making is the most significant contribution towards the evolution of cinema
as such,” says Marek Hovorka, director of the Jihlava International Documentary
Film Festival.
Tariq Ali inspirations
Tariq Ali was the first international guest this year to speak at the unique
Inspiration Forum project. Writer, journalist, activist and film-maker of Pakistani
origin, Tariq Ali engaged in a lively debate with fellow-filmmakers and viewers.
Mr. Ali voiced his belief that East Europe’s dependence on the US makes it
impossible for post-Communist countries to develop a free political and cultural
discourse.
Controversial international premieres
At 7 PM, a most unique home film session will take place with the participation of
director Vojtěch Jasný, offering the viewers an opportunity to vote for the evening
film of their choice. The evening program includes screenings of documentary
films expected to provoke a controversy. Members of the Czech art group
Ztohoven will appear as guests at the international premiere of Citizen K., while
the international premiere of the Slovak documentary The Gypsy Vote will be
introduced by director Jaroslav Vojtek.
Dominik Hašek in Jihlava
The screening of the documentary comedy titled Guns, Pucks, Beer and Dogs
dealing with the history of the Czech Army ice-hockey team will take place at
DIOD Theater at 8 pm on Sunday, featuring a guest appearance by the living
legend of Czech ice-hockey, Dominik Hašek.
