Beowulf Beowulf (originated around 700 AD) -the oldest and most important literary work of the Anglo-Saxon literature – unknown author – a Christian poet - an Old English heroic epic (narrative) poem consisting of 3182 alliterative long lines/verses (alliteration - repetition of a particular sound in a series of words or phrases, example - Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers) - event set in Scandinavia in 5th, 6th centuries - describes customs and manners of tribal life of Anglo-Saxons - the main character is a hero who travels great distances to prove his strength in fights against supernatural demons and beasts, the poem also begins simply "in the middle", which is a characteristic feature of the antique epics. the plot: - Hrothgar, King of Danes and his followers lived happily in a beautiful palace, which he had built, singing and enjoying themselves every day - a monster called Grendel, who lived in a lonely lake, hated this and came every night to kill one of the people living in the palace, this went on for twelve years and nobody was brave enough to kill Grendel - one day a young, strong and brave Viking called Beowulf came to fight with the monster, at night when Grendel came again, he tore off one of his arms ane the monster returned home to die - the next night, the monster´s mother , sea-wolf, came to revenge her son, she took one of the men, Beowulf followed her to the bottom of the lake and killed her with a magic sword, which he found in her cave - in the second part we meet Beowulf wisely ruling Sweden for fifty happy and peaceful years, then he sacrificed his life to save his people from a dragon, people remembered him as the greatest hero and his ashes were buried in the sea Sources: PÍŠA, Josef.
