Metodický pokyn
Prezentace je určena pro žáky SOU. Prezentaci lze použít
pro žáky čtyřletých maturitních oborů v rámci probíraného
tématu: My Town. Cílem tohoto celku bylo seznámit žáky s
významnými městy Pardubického kraje, odkud pochází.
Celek byl doplněn o 3 města, která nejsou z pardubického
kraje, ale pro maturitní zkoušku je jejich znalost zásadní.
Každá prezentace obsahuje interaktivní část, kde si student
může ověřit svoji znalost kliknutím na obrázek konkrétní
architektonické památky.

The Capitol in Washington D.C.

LOCATION:




Washington D.C. (D.C. means District of Columbia) is the
national capital of the United States of America. It is the seat of
the federal government of the USA. The site for the capital city
was chosen by president George Washington himself.
It is situated near the east coast on the Potomac river which
flows into Chesapeake Bay.
Washington D.C. is sometimes nicknamed the white colour
town because of the fact, that there are many clerks and
administrative officers (white-collars).
The city itself has a population about 600 000 people but
when considering the urban agglomeration it is more than 5
million people.
SOME IMPORTANT SIGHTS:



The White House is situated in a park and it is the home of all american
presidents since 1800. In front of the White House there is the ceremonial
grounds. The house was designed by James Horban in the Neoclassical
style in 1792.
The Capitol – It is a rotunda situated on Capitol Hill. The Capitol has housed
the US Congress since 1800. Like all the others federal buildings for the
executive and judicial branches, it is built in the Neoclassical style and has a
white exterior.
The Lincoln Memorial was inspired by greek architecture. It looks like
Parthenon in Athens a bit. It was built to honour the 16th american
president Abraham Lincoln. There is a huge statue of Abraham Lincoln
sitting in an armchair on a marble pedestal inside the building. It is located
in the West Potomac Park.
SOME IMPORTANT SIGHTS:


The Washington Monument is situated opposite the Lincoln
Memorial. It is the white marble obelisk over 100 years old. It
commemorates the first president of the United States of
America George Washington. He was burried in a vault near
Washington D.C.. It is the world‘s tallest stone structure, it is
almost 170 m tall.
The Thomas Jefferson Memorial commemorates the 3rd US
president and it once again looks like a piece of Roman
architecture. It resembles Roman Panthenon in a way. Inside we
can find a bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson holding the
Declaration of Independence in his hand which was written on
4th July in 1776. (The Independence Day)
