The Political System • Officially called The Commonwealt of Australia, the country is a federal democratic state. • As it used to be a British colony, now it is a member of the Commowealth, and the British monarch is the official head of state. • The Queen is represented by the Governor General – the highest political figure. 6 states and 2 territories • Australia consists of 6 states and 2 territories. • Name them according to the map: General map • Australia is the smallest, the driest and the flattest continent. Also it is the sixth largest country in the world. • Its area is 7,6 mil sq km. • It is divided from New Zealand by the Tasman Sea. The Flag • The flag shows a small Union Jack in the left upper corner, five stars of the Southern Cross constalation and a big seven-pointed stars for six states and one territory. Climate and geography • The Great Dividing Range runs along the eastern coast. Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m) is the highest peak of the Australian mainland. • There are deserts in Western Australia, Southern Australia and The Northern Territory. • In the north, tropical rainforests can be found. • South-east and south-west hasve a temperate climate. Australian cities • A large portion of the continent is dry and little inhabited. Most people live along the south-eastern coast. • The largest cities are Sydney and Melbourne – the former capital. • Other large cities are Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide. • The population of Australia is only 21 mil people, so its density is very low. • Find the cities in the map! The Aborigines • Australia was a British penal colony. Most of the population today is of British or other European origin. • But before the colonization started, Australia was inhabited by the Aboriginal people – the Aborigines. There are about a half a million of them now. Interesting places • Find these places in the map and look for more information about them: • • • • • The Great Barrier Reef (Queensland) Uluru / Ayers Rock (Australian Outback) Sydney Melbourne Tasmania Typically Australian • Because the continent has been geographically isolated, many animal and plant species are unique: e.g. The kangaroo, the koala, the wombat, the dingo, the platypus. • The most widely spread plants are many types of eucalyptus tree.
