R IVP 1/8 PRACOVNÍ LIST Caves Aj INTO THE UNDERGROUND Enumerate all effects and interesting things which you can see in a cave. Which caves do you know? What do you know about them? A 1. A secret underground A cave`s decorations dripstones Write numbers of the texts into the circles in the picture according to the effect which the text describes. 1 1. A stalagmite is a kind of a dripstone. It is a karst effect which grows from the bottom of a cave where drop water solutions enriched with dissolved mineral components. 3 A stalactite is a karst effect which grows from the ceiling of a cave or from a skew surface where flow water solutions enriched with dissolved mineral compomnents. 2 A stalagnite is a karst pillar. Stalagnites arises by growing a stalactite and a stalagmite together. A stalagnite can also arise when a stalactite grows to the bottom or on the contrary a stalagmite grows to the ceiling of a cave. Paintings in a Spicak cave How is a cave created? Caves are underground cavities created either at the same time with rocks or later by outer processes. They are created by rocks` dissolving (mailny limestone). Primarily rain water and carbon dioxide help to the process. Such caves we call karst caves. If caves are created by weathering (air flowing), we call them pseudo-karst caves. There can flow small rivers, brooks in caves and sometimes we can find there even lakes. Other caves contain remains of human skeletons, products and pieces of work. The most famous are paintings on the walls, which helped to solve a lot of mysteries in a human history. We can find there remains of small mammals and shells of molluscs. All these things piled up in the caves for thousands years and they provide evidence about fauna development in various periods. A life in darkness Different beetles, grigs, centipedes, multipedes and spiders have often bizzare shapes and colours of body and limbs. They adapt to the cave`s surrounding, where is darkness, dampness and the same temperature during the whole year. There live small mites and colembolans. We can find there also water and land gasteropods. http://www.casopis.ochranaprirody.cz/clanky/bezobratli-obyvatele-jeskyni-ceske-republiky.html Animals in a cave are mixed. An Oxychilus cellarius 6. a colembolan 5. a moth 4. an epeira diadema 3. a long-eared bat Flora in caves Botanists won`t be enthused by a visit of a cave. In the permanent darkness there grow only some mildews, green plants don`t grow there at all.Only on places where is a hole which enables light penetration we can find small oases of green plants, mainly mosses and ferns. Chiropterans of twilight and their mysteries Chiropterans orientate themselves and hunt with help of catching anacamptic sound waves - called echolocation. You will learn more about the effect in an information box. According to the learnt information fill in the picture which sound is produced by a bat and which one is a anacamptic sound. Echolocation Bats orientate themselves during their night flights with the help an of ultrasound`s reflection from different obstacles. This way of oreintation we call echolocation (echo= an echo, location = position finding). Bats find their prey by producing for us inaudible shouts and they accept reflected signals by their sensitive hearing. They are able to evaluate the time which passes from the moment of signal sending and accepting it and fix the distance and obstacles` shape. They are even able to define the speed and direction of a prey`s movement: a signal reflected from a coming insect. The range of bats` echolocator is up to one hundred metres. http://www.acr.army.cz/images/id_8001_9000/8753/radar/f3.htm 3. We divide them in two groups: horseshoe bats and the real bats. They are the only flying mammals. Have a look at the pictures of horseshoe bats and bats. To each statement write if it defines a horseshoe bat or a bat.. The statement about a horseshoe bat mark H and about a bat mark B. HORSESHOE BATS =they wrap themselves in membraneous wings during their sleep =they don`t wrap themselves in wings =they crawl into crevices and crannies =they hang on the ceiling =a snout with membraneous outgrowths =they don`t have membraneous outgrowths =they have rounded ears =they have pointed ears Projekt: Podpora EVVO na základních školách v Pacovì, Registraèní èíslo projektu: CZ.1.07/1.1.01/02.0066 Tento projekt je spolufinancován Evropským sociálním fondem a státním rozpoètem Èeské republiky BATS R IVP 8/8 PRACOVNÍ LIST Caves Aj 5.
