 prohloubení dosavadních znalostí žáků o hlavním městě
Spojeného království
 žáci se orientují v mapě Londýna, dovedou zpracovat
krátkou prezentaci o významných pamětihodnostech města

Where is London?
What is its population?
• London is the capital and the largest city
of Great Britain.
• It is situated in south-eastern England
along the River Thames.
• Its population is about 7 millions.
• It’s one of the world’s major financial and
cultural capitals.
History of London I.
• London was founded by the Romans as a
business crosroad.
• After 1066, William the Conqueror began
construction of the Tower of London.
• The city was largely devastated by the
Great Plaque in 1665, which killed 100,000
people, and the Great Fire of London in
1666, in which 60% of the City burned to the
ground.
History of London II.

Most of the famous buildings we can see today
were built after the Fire, designed by Sir
Christopher Wren or John Nash.
• In the 19th century London became the world’s
largest city with a population of nearly 6 million.
• The first European railway in the world started
there in the 1860s.
• London hosted the Olympic Summer Games in
2012.
